Connect to Meta

SellProof reads Meta's Ad Library through your own free Meta developer app. You set it up once; the built-in guide shows each click in a short video. This page explains every step, and why it's needed.

Why your own app?

Meta gives Ad Library access per person, through a developer app. Using your own means your searches count toward your own limits, nobody else sees what you research, and SellProof never needs a server or your Facebook password.

When SellProof can't find a working connection, it opens the guide by itself. It has four steps:

Step 1: Confirm who you are on Facebook

Confirming your identity at facebook.com/ID.

Meta only shares Ad Library data with people who confirmed their identity. It's free and done once.

  1. Log in to Facebook and open facebook.com/ID (the guide has a button for it).
  2. As the reason, pick Running ads about social issues, elections or politics. You don't have to run such ads; it's simply the option that includes Ad Library access.
  3. Choose any country from the list, press Get started, then Yes, continue.
  4. Follow Meta's steps: turn on two-factor authentication and upload a photo of your ID. Meta usually confirms within 1–3 days. For me it took 15 minutes.
You don't have to wait

Go on with steps 2 and 3 while Meta checks your ID. SellProof checks everything at the end.

Step 2: Create your free Meta app

Creating the app and copying the App ID and App Secret.
  1. Open Meta for Developers and log in with the same Facebook account. First time there? Press Get started and follow Meta's steps to make a free developer account.
  2. Press Create app and name it SellProof (or anything you like).
  3. Under Add use cases, pick Create & manage ads with Marketing API. It's the one that includes ads_read, which the Ad Library needs.
  4. For the business portfolio, choose I don't want to connect a business portfolio yet, then press Next and Create app.
  5. Open App settings → Basic, copy the App ID, press Show next to App Secret and copy it too.
  6. Paste both into SellProof and press Check my app.

The App Secret stays on your computer. SellProof only sends it to Meta, to turn short tokens into one that lasts about 60 days.

Step 3: Get your token

Getting a token in Graph API Explorer.
  1. Open Graph API Explorer.
  2. On the right, under Meta App, pick the app you made in step 2.
  3. Under User or Page, choose Get User Access Token.
  4. Under Permissions, add ads_read.
  5. Press Generate Access Token and allow it. Copy the token (copy icon next to it).
  6. Paste it into SellProof within an hour and press Connect.

Tokens from the Explorer expire within about an hour. SellProof immediately turns yours into one that lasts about 60 days.

Step 4: You're connected

SellProof shows how many days your access lasts. Press Start using SellProof and run your first product check.

Renewing every 60 days

Meta doesn't allow tokens that last forever, and they can't be renewed silently. SellProof warns you two weeks before your access runs out. Renewing takes about a minute: repeat step 3 only. Your app from step 2 and your identity check stay valid.

Where your keys are stored

Is this allowed?

Yes. SellProof uses Meta's official Ad Library API through your own developer app, under the terms you accept from Meta. It reads the same public ads anyone can see at facebook.com/ads/library. No scraping and no browser extension.
